Japanese Box Office, October 18-19: Ponyo Rises to #8

Gekijōban Saraba Kamen Rider Den-O Final Countdown, the third movie based on live-action special-effects series Kamen Rider Den-O, dropped from #2 to #5 in Japan during its third weekend, the October 18-19 weekend. Paco and the Magical Book, the surreal live-action fantasy film that reunites director Tetsuya Nakashima, actress Anna Tsuchiya, and other key players from the Kamikaze Girls film, also fell from #4 to #6 in its sixth weekend. Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea (pictured at right), Hayao Miyazaki's first feature film in nearly four years, actually rose from #9 to #8 in its 14th weekend. After October 13, it has earned 14.9 billion yen (about US$149 million).
Tomoyuki Takimoto's live-action version of Motorō Mase's Ikigami: The Ultmate Limit suspense manga slipped from #8 to #9 in its fourth weekend. The first segment of Yukihiko Tsutsumi's three-part adaptation of Naoki Urasawa's 20th Century Boys manga fell from #7 off the chart in its eighth weekend. The Variety entertainment trade news source estimates this film has earned 4 to 4.5 billion yen (US$40-45 million).
