I liked the bit when Priestess heard that the princess apparently became a follower of the Earthmother because she wants to be like her, which made the priestess cry. This being because it felt like a lot so far has been the priestess comparing herself to everyone else, the awesome fighters in her party, and the Sword Maiden that managed to show up in the nick of time with a powerful miracle. It feels like the first time the Priestess really managed to see that someone sees her as a hero, something aspirational, that she went from her view as the bottom member of her group to perhaps kind of what the Goblin Slayer was to her.

I was also wondering about the Goblin Slayer in what was meant by his repeating that nothing changes. I was thinking of it being a bit sad of going from his promise to keep being able to fight, to maybe him feeling stuck in a never finished way while others would be happy in their achievements. We did kind of find out that at heart his dream is kind of wanting to live out a child idealised heroism, which would be the sort of saving princess and defeating dragons. He literally just saved a princess, so I was wondering if he could stop to think he achieved a bit of that. And thinking that they showed bits that have happened, which includes the dinosaur, which he totally could look as like a dragon.

What was the deal with the Knight of Diamonds guy?

S2 #12 End

Last week felt like it was too much of a cakewalk for the party, and so it proved. Short of actually reading the source material, did anyone guess the goblin priest was going to use himself as the vessel to summon a Greater Demon? Because the Party stopped the ritual halfway, the best it could do was summon a hand. Which thanks to the flashback with the Sword Maiden's original party we know is capable of summoning blizzards with a short delay between castings. Even unprepared and effectively ambushed, the Slayer and his crew still find a way out of the situation, using what skills and equipment they have as well as their environment to maximum effect.

Facing the goblin horde at the exit to the settlement really hits home just how close the Slayer and his party came to annihilation. The last time they were in such a fix was at the Elven fortress, and for that scrap they at least had an exit plan. This time round the Slayer was literally pinning his hopes on the Sword Maiden coming with assistance, since he knew she couldn't fight through the horde on her own to save them. She delivered, which means our franchise doesn't come to a screeching halt and the Slayer and crew fight another day.

A bit of cleaning up as we viewers find out what really happened behind the kidnapping. The "Knight of Diamonds" with the blonde hair is almost certainly the kingdom's sovereign, whom the cultists were so disparaging about just a few minutes before. It's surprising he kept his identity secret, but not a surprise about the result when he and the mage take on the cultists. The other thing mentioned by the corrupt noble was the "rumour" supposedly invented by peasants, which I'm interpreting as the Slayer and his crew. They had never factored in the Slayer's involvement in the Princess's rescue, so the Slayer once again in his own way contributes to the Greater Cause without really knowing about it.

The Slayer's soliloquy at the end is a rare moment of reflection for him as he thinks through his latest set of story arcs and his wavering motivation. Taking the reductionist approach works for him; he likes things to stay the same and is happy to keep killing goblins to maintain the status quo even though deep down he would have preferred to live his dream the same way he sees the Priestess and other adventurers live theirs. He hasn't realised it, but in many ways he is already living his dream even if he sees goblin slaying as his duty. Peasants already extol his name and those with power and influence like the Sword Maiden (and now the kingdom's ex-adventurer sovereign) look to him when his specialist skills are in demand. Not quite what he dreamed of, but the reality is a lot better than what he makes it out to be.

The gore and shock value from season one may have been toned down because of the new airtime, but the world building and story told in this season is much more entertaining as it shows a side of the Slayer viewers wouldn't have expected from Season One and the movie. Even if the first arc wasn't great because of the characters introduced, everything aired to date was first-rate entertainment and with so much unadapted material to come I'm more than happy if future adaptation are greenlit sooner rather than later. It's done well for itself this season in the face of stiff competition, now to see if the sales figures back up my rosy estimates and convince the powers that be to proceed with a third season and more.
