I backed the original Kickstarter with the Premium set, and the package turned out really nice. Crowdsourcing was a little shaky at first, but as things developed, worth the time and wait over the past year. I've got my classic DVD set still and this transfer to Blu-Ray is very good. Probably the most organized, informative, and involving Kickstarter I have ever backed too. I can't wait for AnimEigo's next project. I would happily be a backer again.

Gotta wonder what they will do next.
They haven't licensed anything new in awhile not even live action films or samurai films like they have the last several years. |

Did anyone else notice some grain-splotchiness (don't know how else to describe it) throughout Episode 5? Aside from that one hiccup, this series does look and sound damn good, housed within a very nice artbox.
I'm sincerely hoping for Japan to do a future blu-ray transfer for the Tokyo 2040 series (the superior version, in my opinion), and if it comes with the English dub, I'm set! |

Nice. This series deserves a BD release. Now that I have a BD player, I should consider buying it. This is a great series of the 80's, as there's never been another like. It's a testament to the films of our time.

I watched episode 5 the other day and can't remember anything out of the ordinary. 2040 was good, but some of the personalities took a turn for the worse, I feel. And the soundtrack's also merely OK and I don't think I like any of the vocal tracks. It's a different vibe, but the original BGC is overflowing with good music... |

Guess we differ there. The original did have good music ('Say Yes' is my favorite tune) but it's still screamingly 1980's (for anyone who would have a problem with that), while the rock music of 2040, both hard and soft, had overall aged considerably better. I especially love the 'Waiting for You' ending theme but I've listened to the whole soundtrack to death by now. |

I haven't seen it in a while, and it's hard to judge with such low quality of releases past, but wasn't that show done with digipaint? Either way, it had a ton of digital effects, so I'd expect interlacing and upscaling. |

Isn't it the same deal with Cowboy Bebop, with its mix of digital and cel animation? Hopefully it wouldn't look worse, and even upscales can look good on blu-ray if done right. |

Only the OP/ED were fully digital, the rest of the show was done on cels (minus the effects as you mention). Dual! also had a digital OP/ED but used cels for the main show, and I think some other AIC shows from the period were like this. I would hope that they can still be given a true HD release like Cowboy Bebop and Escaflowne were given, but they might not consider it worth the trouble to scan the film and then re-do the effects. |

It's a fantastic set that had the potential to be even better or just as good as a Japanese release, and I'm glad I ponied up for the Premium edition. I was hoping it could stand up with the best of Japanese BR releases but it wasn't to be, it just doesn't feel as classy. It's definetly better than any Funimation Limited Editions, but it just failed where I hoped it would succeed. It was interesting to see how the 'crowd production' thing worked. I don't think mob rule is a great idea. (Honestly a challenge coin and if anyone wants one, I'll be more than happy to send it to you for $5!). If you try to cater for everyone you just get something that not everyone is happy about. For one thing, we are not graphic artists and I think we could have gotten something a lot better if one was involved with the production. It might cost more so why not have it as a stretch goal. How about a new transfer (the one we have was released in '07 so it was probably done in '06, and we've had a lot of improvements since then. Yes, it might cost a pretty penny (so have it as a stretch goal), I think stretch goal would have given us an even better product as opposed to crowd production decisions. Despite some negatives this is still a great product and I would do it again, whether it had a crowd production theory or stretch goals. |

A little bit pricey - but for a custom boutique item like this, it's probably to be expected. I'll have to think about picking this up sometime soon.
It's good to see Animeigo still alive. They did some of the best laserdiscs back in the day. |
