Hollywood Theatre to Show Arrietty in Japanese Without Subs
posted on by Justin Sevakis
The El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood will be hosting six screenings of Studio Ghibli's The Secret World of Arrietty anime film in Japanese with no subtitles. When asked for the reason behind the non-English screenings, a representative told ANN that the theatre hoped to serve the local Japanese population, who might find unnecessary subtitles distracting.
The theatre will screen the film's standard-release English dubbed version between February 17 and March 8. The Japanese-only screenings will run at 10:00 a.m. on February 22, February 29 and March 7; and at 7:00 p.m. on February 19, February 24 and March 4. The theater will also host an exhibit of Studio Ghibli artwork for all attendees.
The El Capitan Theatre is a historic Hollywood single-screen theatre that opened in 1926. Located across the street from the Kodak Theater, it is now owned and operated by The Walt Disney Company. Disney co-funded a two-year restoration project and re-opened the theater in 1991. The company uses the theater for live stage shows, world premieres, and other events.
Hiromasa Yonebayashi's film, a re-imagining of Mary Norton's 1952 novel The Borrowers, will open throughout North America on February 17.
