New Manga Imagines Expert Pharmacist Reborn into Fantasy World

Wish fulfillment for pharmacy students

Isekai stories, in which ordinary teenage boys are reborn into fantasy worlds — often closely resembling the settings of RPGs they've played plenty of — are all the rage these days, but the new manga Isekai Yakkyoku ("Fantasy World Pharmacy"), by Hijiri Kōya, puts an original spin on the formula. Based on a web novel series by the medical researcher Lizreel, its main character, Yakutani (whose name includes the character for "medicine") is an adult expert pharmacist. He's so dedicated to his studies, though, that he works himself to death.

Before long, though, he's reborn into a medieval-style fantasy world as a noble boy named Pharma de Medisis.

He soon finds out that while he's been born into a medicinal family with large estates and ample wealth, his new world is far behind ours in medical knowledge. Lichtenberg figures on his arms, for instance, are taken for a sign of protection from the god of thunder and provokes an instant bout of prayer from his maid, Lotte.

Pharma also has the power to control water, a form of magic called shinjutsu ("holy technique"). He doesn't know how to use it, though, leading to the incident below.

Luckily, Pharma has a buxom tutor, Eleonore Bonnefoy, to teach him how to guide his magic.

The manga follows Pharma as he uses his new shinjutsu ability together with his medicinal knowledge to save others. It was published on March 23, but is available to read on ComicWalker (Japanese only). Customers who buy it at Animate, Gamers!, Sanyōdō, Toranoana, Melon Books, or WonderGOO will receive bonus prizes.
