Gundam Thunderbolt Gaiden Manga Resumes on February 8

Spinoff manga went on hiatus last May

Manga creator Yasuo Ohtagaki revealed on Saturday that he will resume the Mobile Suit Gundam Thunderbolt Gaiden manga on February 8. The manga has been on hiatus since last May.

Ohtagaki also published the first chapter of a two-shot manga titled "DEEP" on Shogakukan's eBigComic4 website on Friday. The second chapter will debut on February 1.

The Mobile Suit Gundam Thunderbolt Gaiden manga is a collection of short stories focusing on different mobile suits that appear in Hobby Japan's Thunderbolt Mechanics magazine. Ohtagaki launched the manga on the eBigComic4 website in December 2015. Shogakukan published the manga's second compiled book volume in April 2017.

Ohtagaki recently resumed the main Mobile Suit Gundam Thunderbolt manga in Shogakukan's Big Comic Superior magazine last December. The manga was on hiatus since September due to tenosynovitis (inflammation surrounding the tendons). In a message accompanying the manga's resumption, Ohtagaki noted due to the worsening symptoms, he has been unable to draw small details using his dominant left hand, and it may be difficult to maintain the quality level of the manga. He continued that he will change his drawing style so as not to worsen the condition of his left hand.

Ohtagaki launched the main Mobile Suit Gundam Thunderbolt manga in Big Comic Superior in March 2012, and Shogakukan published the 12th compiled book volume last July. Viz Media published the manga's ninth volume in English on November 20. The manga inspired two original net anime series, each of which received a compilation film.

Ohtagaki created the Moonlight Mile manga, which inspired a 2007 television anime. ADV Films (and later FUNimation Entertainment) released the Moonlight Mile anime in North America.
