Dark Horse releases adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft science-fiction horror novella in English

The Association des Critiques et des journalistes de Bande Dessinée (ACBD; Association of Critics and Journalists of Comics) awarded Gou Tanabe's H.P. Lovecraft's At The Mountains Of Madness (Kūki no Sanmyaku ni te) manga with the Prix Asie de la Critique ACBD 2019 award at the Japan Expo event last weekend. The award honors an Asian comic published in France between July 2018 and June 2019.

The four other nominees in the award category were Inio Asano's Reiraku (Downfall), Kan Takahama's Nyx no Lantern (Nyx'x Lantern), Minoru Furuya's Saltiness, and Keum Suk Gendry-Kim's Grass.

Dark Horse is releasing H.P. Lovecraft's At The Mountains Of Madness in English, and it describes the story:

January 25, 1931: an expedition team arrives at a campsite in Antarctica . . . to find its crew of men and sled dogs strewn and dead. But a still more horrific sight is the star-shaped mound of snow nearby . . . for under its five points is a grave--and what lies beneath is not human!

The manga is an adaptation of the famous H.P. Lovecraft science-fiction horror novella published in 1936. Dr. William Dyer is part of an Antarctic expedition that unearths strange artifacts and a city older than time that hints at origins from beyond the stars. When the expedition runs into mortal danger, they begin to realize they have awakened an ancient entity.

The manga was nominated for the Best Comic award at the 46th Angoulême International Comics Festival in January. The series was also nominated for the 22nd Annual Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize in February 2018. Kadokawa published the four-volume manga between October 2016 and December 2017.

Dark Horse released Tanabe's H.P. Lovecraft's The Hound and Other Stories manga in one volume in August 2017.

This year's Japan Expo will be held at Parc des Expositions de Paris-Nord-Villepinte in Villepinte, France from July 4 to 7.
