No Gen Con Australia in 2011

Gen Con Australia
PRESS RELEASE – FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

No Gen Con™ Australia in 2011

One of Brisbane's largest games and entertainment Expos “Gen Con Australia” regrets to announce that the annual show will not return in 2011. Show licensees, Eventions Creative Event Management Pty Ltd have concluded that the show cannot proceed in its current format, in today's economic climate and will also forgo the renewal of their license from Gen Con LLC for future years.

Gen Con Oz, an exciting entertainment and gaming show, which attracted more that 10,000 attendees in each prior year was cancelled in July 2010 to the disappointment of the show's thousands of fans. The show was cancelled due to the limited availability of sponsorship in the marketplace for expos and events.

“Last year saw a huge downturn in the global economy. Although Australia did dodge the proverbial bullet of the 'GFC', marketing spend of games companies both here and overseas has shifted away from experiential marketing at new events such as Gen Con™ OZ, with a focus more on existing and established events,” said Ian Houlihan, Events and Marketing Director of Gen Con Australia. “Without the ongoing support and commitment from sponsors, the show simply cannot go on.”

Ian and Felice Houlihan have built a community of support for their well-loved convention with well over 2000 Facebook followers, and a mailing list of over 6000 nationwide.

“The people who have come to love our show during our first two expos will be bitterly disappointed with this news", said Ian. "Although Gen Con™ OZ is a fantastic event, our company has examined everyway possible to make the show a reality in coming years to no avail. Even with the support from many corners of the gaming community helping us along the way, and a huge loyal fan-base, we just couldn't get the financial backing to make it affordable to run."

Gen Con™ Australia has showcased board games, computer games, console games, digital media, miniature war-gaming, pop culture and role playing games to the mainstream in 2008 and 2009 with wide praise from the industry. The show also presented both local and international authors, local and overseas media celebrities, and game designers as part of its family friendly line-up.

"Gaming is something that the family can enjoy together," said Ian Houlihan, "Its a hobby which is ageless and one that can be enjoyed by anyone. This was something that we held as our core ideal for the show. It's just a shame now that the show can't go on. For that we must apologise to all our friends, supporters and volunteers".
